Export readiness

What a GFSI certificate actually unlocks — and what it honestly costs

Gujarat exported USD 10.03 billion of agro and processed food in FY 2025-26 — about 18% of India's total, from one state. Very little of that reaches a modern-trade shelf in Europe or North America without a GFSI-recognised certificate behind it. FSSC 22000, SQF and BRCGS are the three schemes most Indian exporters encounter, and which one you need is usually decided by your buyer, not by you.

On cost, here is what we can and cannot tell you honestly

A competing Indian consultancy publishes all-in figures of roughly ₹1.5–2.5 lakh for a small unit, ₹3.5–5.5 lakh for a plant of 30–100 employees, and ₹7–12 lakh for larger operations, with annual maintenance of ₹75,000–1.5 lakh and a timeline of two to six months. Those are one company's published prices, not an industry benchmark, and we quote them as a reference point rather than a rule.

Get two or three quotes. Any consultant who discourages you from doing that is telling you something.

What genuinely varies the number

  • Whether you already hold an FSSAI third-party audit history
  • Whether your HACCP plan has been validated or merely written
  • How many product categories and processing lines are in scope
  • Whether your existing records can survive being sampled

A plant with three years of disciplined records certifies far faster than an identical plant without them — which is the strongest practical argument for getting the domestic audit right first and treating it as the foundation rather than a separate exercise.

One thing to ask before you start

The certification body's audit fee is separate from any consultant's fee and is paid by you directly to them. If a quote bundles the two into a single number without breaking them out, ask for the split.
